WEEK 20 RESULTS: SUPER BOWL XVI

20 San Francisco 21  vs  San Diego 22
@ Pontiac Silver Dome

(by Brad Stafford) Good defense and turnovers were the difference in Super Bowl XVI. As the incredible ride for the San Diego Chargers came to a triumphant end Sunday evening at the Pontiac Silverdome. The offense has always been a constant for the Chargers but no one could have imagined how the defense would have responded through 3 playoff games and a Super Bowl Championship. Forced turnovers played a big part in a frustrating first half for San Francisco's offense, leaving them scoreless through 2 quarters. The first turnover, an Earl Cooper fumble gave San Diego great field position at the 49er 31 yard line. Good 49er defense forced a 47 FG from Rolf Benirschke and a early 3-0 Charger lead. Next drive the 49ers drove 69 yards to the Charger 2 yard line where RB Johnny Davis coughed up the football at the Charger 1 yard line, spoiling any chance for San Francisco to take the lead.

Early 2nd quarter a 22 yard punt return by James Brooks once again gave San Diego excellent field position at the 49er 39 yard line. Eight plays later Fouts found Joiner in the corner of the endzone for a 9-0 Charger lead, as Benirschke's missed the PAT . Next series the 49er offense was held to 3 and out. The Charger offense made the most of their defenses steady play and drove 56 yards on just 4 plays culminating with a Muncie off-tackle sprint from 31 yards out to make it 16-0 San Diego. This score would stand as both teams went into halftime.

On San Francisco's second possession of the 3rd quarter, Joe Montana and the 49er offense put together a scoring drive of 73 yards on 11 plays. Montana connected with Paul Hofer on a 19 yard screen pass which made it 16-7 Chargers. Three series later the Chargers drove to the 49er 33 yard line where LB Keena Turner picked off a short hitch pass intended for Brooks. This was a big play for the 49ers as it kept the Chargers from scoring and allowed the 49ers to mount another scoring drive. Going 9 plays 78 yards and a 2 yard touchdown pass from Montana to Freddie Soloman. The Charger lead was now just 2, 16-14. Next series, first down for the Chargers. QB Dan Fouts tried to force a hitch pass to Dwight scales. Eric Wright steps in front and returns the interception 4 yards giving the 49ers possession at the San Diego 32 yard line. Four plays later Montana hits RB Ricky Patton on another screen pass for 9 yards and 21-16 49er advantage.

Sensing the game slipping away, the Charger offense needed to give its defense a rest and put points on the board. On 14 plays covering 76 yards the Chargers were able to put 3 on the board as Benirschke was true from 27 yards, leaving the score 21-19 San Francisco. The Chargers couldn't help but be disappointed as they needed a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, returner Amos Lawrence did the unthinkable, fumbled away the football. Giving the Chargers new life and the ball at the 49er 13 yard line. Credit must be given to the 49er defense as the Chargers netted 7 yards on 3 plays forcing a Benirschke 23 yard field goal and another Charger lead. But the damage was done, 22-21 San Diego with 2:59 left in the 4th quarter. Montana had one more shot to put his team in a position to win the game. Its last drive however was marred by 2 penalties and 2 San Diego sacks which left the 49ers with a 4th and 17 yards to go at the San Diego 47 yard line. A 4th down which the 49ers were unable to convert. The San Diego win makes it back to back Super Bowl wins for the once AFL franchise.
